Call for BIRD research grant 2021

To promote clinical and basic research on inflammatory bowel diseases by young investigators in Belgium.

Three BIRD research grants of 6000 Euros each will be awarded each year
A first part of 2000 Euro will be awarded after acceptation, a second after presentation during an (inter)national gastroenterology congress and a third one after full publication.
In 2021 and 2022, the first part of the grant (2000€) will be granted thanks to a legacy received through the Koning Boudewijnstichting'.

Young clinicians and scientists who are younger than 40 on the submission deadline
The research project can be submitted by one or two persons of the same Belgian institution
Candidates who previously applied but did not receive the grant can apply again.
Send the following documents to 
  1. 1) Short CV of the applicant: maximum 1 (!) A4 page, Arial Narrow 12

    2) Summary of previous research of the applicant: maximum 1 (!) A4 page, Arial Narrow 12

    3) Research project: maximum 3 (!) A4 pages, Arial Narrow 12, simple interline, including:

                * Background

                * Research hypothesis and objectives

                * Methodology and limitations

                * Research environment

                * Perspectives and added value for the IBD patients

    REMARK: do not mention your name or affiliation in the research project

Applications will be reviewed by the BIRD governing board and at least one foreign reviewer
Applications will be scored on interest, originality, writing/presentation, feasibility and an overall evaluation of the project
At least two BIRD research grants will be awarded to a pre-doctor



Grant winners will be personally informed and announced at the May general assembly and  through the BIRD newsletter.

Winners will also be posted on the BIRD website


BIRD grant winners can be invited later on to the BIRD general assembly to present the results of their research

BIRD grant winners are expected to mention the BIRD grant when presenting or publishing data from their project that received support via this grant.

Winners of the BIRD grants 2021 and 2022 also are specifically expected to mention "this project was supported by a bequest to the Koning Boudewijn Foundation".
